Short-Season Sunday: Hits for Mazzilli and Strikeouts for Gant

SSA: @ Connecticut Tigers 6, Brooklyn Cyclones 4

2B L.J. Mazzilli was 3-for-4 with a double and a strikeout. The 22-year-old is hitting .297/.368/.337 with a very Mets’ 12 walks against 19 strikeouts in 26 games.

An 0-for-4 dropped 19-year-old catcher Tomas Nido to .182/.217/.227 (1 walk, six strikeouts) in 12 games with Brooklyn. I expected he’d struggle, but thought he could get to a .240 or .250 batting average. Of course, the season is young, and he’s a hot streak away from the mark.

John Gant: 5.2 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 9 K. He’s up to 41 K/11 BB in 27.2 IP over five starts this year for the Cyclones.

R (App): Kingsport Mets 6, @ Burlington Royals 4

Tuschak KMets HeadFor some reason they played this one at Wake Forest, in Winston-Salem, NC. Game two was rained out of course.

LF Joe Tuschak (.300/.338/.417) hit his first home run of the year. The 20-year-old is heating up (.325/.341/.450 in his last 10 games).

21-year-old Victor Cruzado had three hits to lift his line to .396/.448/.585 in 15 games.  At 21, he’s making the jump from the DSL straight to the Appy League, which he’ really too old for.

Persio Reyes: 6.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 HR.

No Champ Stuart, who was plunked by a pitch a few days ago.
