Tuesday, Gabriel Ynoa led the way: 6.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K. Ynoa used his ballpark early giving up a long flyball in the first that CF Brandon Nimmo reeled in on the warning track in deep left-center field. All three hits he gave up were singles, and none were hit particularly hard. He pitched very heavily of his fastball although he showed both his slider and changeup. I do not have a specific count, but I suspect he threw many fewer changeups than Luis Cessa did on Monday night. After 76.2 innings last year for Brooklyn (plus whatever he gets credit for in extended spring training and instructional league) he is now up to 116.2 innings in 2013. Without counting the extended/instructs innings, his workload has increased by 40 innings already. Giving him credit for 30 or so innings in extended would give him some wiggle room for the duration of the year.
Beck Wheeler struck out two in the ninth to lower his ERA in the Gnats’ bullpen to 1.91 this year. He now has 63 strikeouts against nine walks in 42.1 innings this year. Pitching mostly at 90-91 with some 92, the former NDFA (and collegiate SS) has also abused SAL hitters with a forkball.
