Danny Salazar opened the season for Akron with 5 solid innings, 2 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 5 K in a loss to Binghamton. On the year he has struck out 22 and walked 6 in 17.2 IP, and struck out 9 over 5 shutout innings in his last start.
Rafael Montero picked up the win in that season opening matchup with Akron, going 5.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 8 K. He has struck out 27 and walked 1 in 22.2 IP while allowing a .183 BAA on the season.

West Virginia is hitting .271 with a .778 OPS, both in the top 3 in the SAL, while their pitching has a SAL worst 5.41 ERA and 1.64 whip.  Clay Holmes was the Pirates 2011 9th round pick, the 20 year old is listed at 6’5″ 230 lbs. He has struck out 14 and walked 15 over 18 IP this year. Last year he struck out 34 and walked 29 in 13 NYPL starts. Savannah’s patient top of the lineup would seem to be a tough match up for him.
Steven Matz has struck out 18 and walked 4 over 3 starts and 14 IP this year for a 1.49 FIP. In the early going he has cut his walk rate in half, from 14.3% last year to 7.1% in 2013.
