In an Amazin Avenue fanpost, Josh Smolow takes a look at Jenrry Mejia’s new plan of attack using pitchF/x data from his first start. It was pretty clear the Nationals had an outdated game plan, but his new arsenal should give him a chance to be a successful starter at the big league level.
Rainy Lara has struck out 6 and walked 8 over his last three starts. He has struck out 84 and walked 13 up to that point. As he’s pitched exacty 100 innings after 68 for Brooklyn last year (plus some in XST) so he might be wearing down at this point.
Jake Kuebler struck out 9 and walked 1 while allowing 8 hits over his last 10.2 IP.
Chris Kirsch has struck out 22 and walked 15 over 40.2 IP and is being hit at a .295 clip in the NYPL.
Carlos Valdez has walked 11 and struck out 20 over 29.2 IP, and has failed to complete the 5th inning in half of his starts.
Akeel Morris has yet to allow an earned run this year, having allowed just 2 unearned runs over 22 IP of piggybacking with Valdez. He’s struck out 29 and walked 11 while allowing just 10 hits.

Monday 8:05 ET – RHP Bruce Billings (10-4, 4.37) vs. RHP Matt Fox (4-3, 4.79)
Mon. Game Two – RHP Darren Byrd (1-0, 4.06) vs. RHP D.J. Mitchell (5-4, 7.48)
Matt Fox struggled with Reno in his last two starts, allowing 19 hits and 4 walks, striking out 6, over 10.2 IP in back to back outings. He’s pitched to a 3.04 ERA in 4 home starts. LasVegas moved 2 games ahead of Sacramento with the win yesterday. Recently promoted John Church has fared well in his early use. In 7 games (4 of which were against Reno) he’s struck out 7 and walked 3 while allowing 10 hits over 10.2 IP. SSS and all but he has a lower whip than Edgin, Aardsma and Germen did in their time for LasVegas.
AA: Binghamton Mets (66-41) off
Armando Rodriguez was transferred back up to LasVegas, with Giancarlo Alvardo heading the other way. This is likely a temporary move to give the 51s an extra bullpen arm for today’s double header, as the B-Mets have the off day they really don’t need a sixth starting pitcher…
