Rafael Montero goes for Binghamton; Wednesday 5/1 Games

AA: Erie Seawolves (12-11) @ Binghamton Mets (14-11) Listen
Wednesday 6:35 ET – RHP Victor Larez (3-0, 3.43) vs. RHP Rafael Montero (3-1, 1.95)

Victor Larez faced Binghamton on April 8th allowing a run on 1 hit and 2 BB/4 K over 5 IP, the only game he has not won this year.  He’s struck out 16 and walked 7 over 21 IP on the year.
Rafael Montero picked up a win in Akron on April 9th, going 6 IP, 1 R, 6 H, 0 BB, 7 K.  He’s struck out 35 and walked 3 so far this year, and hasn’t given up more than 2 runs in any start.

Binghamton matched a franchise record with 14 wins in April, with a back and forth win last night. At 14-11 they are one game behind Portland (14-9) in the Eastern League Eastern div. They have played a lot of close games and Jeff Walters (who leads the EL in saves with 8) has made them stand up. Blake Forsythe leads the team with a .333 BA which would be good for a tie for 7th in the EL if he had enough plate appearances to qualify. With Juan Centeno in AAA those PA’s are more available.

A: Kannapolis Intimidators [CWS] (10-14) @ Savannah Sand Gnats (15-9) Listen
Wednesday 7:05 ET – LHP Jefferon Olacio (1-3, 9.00) vs. RHP Matt Bowman (3-0, 2.38)

TH: CF Brandon Nimmo is not in the lineup tonight against a lefty. Gnats’ manager Luis Rojas told me that Nimmo has been nursing a hand contusion and the team wanted to give him the extra day to go with scheduled day off Tuesday to heal up.

19 year old Jefferson Olacio picked up his first win in his last start, giving up 2 runs on 4 hits and 2 BB/4K over 5 IP.  In 2012 he has struck out 9 and walked 8 in 15 IP.  After an early run of right handed starters the Gnats have seen a spate of lefties recently.
Kevin Plawecki is hitting .438/.418/.750 with no strike outs against left handed pitching.
Matt Bowman has been among the best starters in the SAL in April, in the top 15 in ERA and whip, while picking up 3 wins in a six man rotation.  His last start he went 6 IP , 6 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 4 K.  He has consistently struck out 4 or 5 batters in each of his starts.

AAA: Las Vegas 51s (12-12) @ Reno Aces (8-18) Listen
Wednesday 9:35 ET – RHP Carlos Torres (0-2, 6.27) vs. RHP Randall Delgado (0-2, 9.00)

Carlos Torres has allowed more than two base runners per inning in his four starts, 30 H, 8 BB, and 19 K over 18.2 IP.  In each of his last two starts he has allowed a single walk… progress… ?
Randall Delgado is still just 23 even tho it seems like he has been around forever.  He’s having his own troubles adjusting to his first experience in the PCL have given up 28 hits and 14 walks in 21 IP.  He has struck out 19 and allowed 6 home runs.

Las Vegas completed April with a win to even their record at .500, 2 GB in the tightly bunched PCL Pacific Southern Div. Andrew Brown leads the team in batting, his .355 BA is good for 17th in the PCL (5 regulars are still hitting over .400) As a team they are middle of the pack offensively, but with 17 home runs which is third to last, and just 11 steals (last) their offense could be better. The pitching has been hovering around last with a 1.69 whip, thanks in part to 103 walks (tie for 3rd worst) and are 10th in strike outs.

St. Lucie Mets (16-9)

After losing the resumption of Tuesday night’s suspended game the FSL Mets were rained out in Wednesday scheduled game in their only trip to Tampa.  St. Lucie will head to Fort Myers to take on the top team in the FSL for three.
