Saturday 4/6 Games

Mets affiliates are off to an 7-1 start, with the pitching leading the way (no surprise) allowing 2.5 runs per game.

AA: Binghamton Mets (2-0) @ Akron Aeros (0-2) Listen
Saturday 2:05 ET – RHP Logan Verrett (0-0, 0.00) vs. LHP Matt Packer (0-0, 0.00)

The B-Mets are off to their first 2-0 start since 2002 after a pair of 2-1 wins.  2011 third round pick Logan Verrett finished off 2012 with 6 starts for St. Lucie, going 2-0, with a 2.09 ERA and 0.88 whip, and earned a spot in AA this spring.  Matt Packer dealt with shoulder troubles last year after leading the EL in IP for Akron in 2011.

A+: St. Lucie Mets (2-0) @ Jupiter Hammerheads (0-2) Listen
Saturday 6:35 ET – RHP Jacob deGrom (0-0, 0.00) vs. RHP Anthony DeSclafani (0-0, 0.00)

St. Lucie heads to Jupiter to continue their opening set with the Hammerheads home opener.  Jake deGrom wrapped up his 2012 with 4 starts in St. Lucie, going 3-0 with a 2.08 ERA and 0.93 whip.  Anthony DeSclafani was acquired as part of the big trade between the Marlins and Blue Jays, and was also on the Lansing team with Syndergaard and Nicolino last year.

A: Savannah Sand Gnats (1-1) @ Rome Braves (1-1) Listen
Saturday 7:00 ET – LHP Steven Matz (0-0, 0.00) vs. RHP Williams Perez (0-0, 0.00)

Tonights tilt is a matchup of pitchers, born eight days apart in May of 1991, who have moved slowly through their organizations.  Steven Matz was finally healthy and on the mound for the Mets in 2012, but it didn’t last long. He made 6 starts for Kingsport (Appy) and while the ERA (1.55) and BAA (.158) were excellent, we walked 17 in 29 IP and his season came to an early end with more arm troubles.  Williams Perez has spent the last three years in rookie ball making incrimental progress.  He posted a 1.12 whip, with 54 K to 9 BB in 56.1 IP for Danville (Appy) last year.

AAA: Las Vegas 51s (2-0) @ Sacramento River Cats (0-2) Listen
Saturday 10:05 ET – RHP Collin McHugh (0-0, 0.00) vs. LHP Justin Thomas (0-0, 0.00)

Collin McHugh gets the call for AAA tonight (with Aaron Laffey all but set to pitch for the Mets Sunday) after a strong 2012 that saw him earn a big league debut.  Between Binghamton and Buffalo McHugh posted a 2.91 ERA, 1.14 whip, and .222 BAA.  In AAA his walks and homers ticked up, something that could be a bigger problem in the PCL than the IL.  After four years as a reliever Justin Thomas returned to starting late last year, and is on his 5th different AAA team in the last five years.
