Mailbag: Hidden Infield Prospect? No.

Can you give us a little info on Juan Carlos Gamboa? I don’t seem to hear much about him, but he’s putting up good numbers in Winter Ball. What’s his future in the organization look like?  Thanks!

Sure. Juan Carlos Gamboa is a solid example of organizational filler. The second baseman will be 22 on April 18, 2013 and has 13 total at-bats above short-season Brooklyn. He has had a nice winter for  Caneros de los Mochis in the Mexican winter league, hitting .270/.390/.444 in 28 games with five doubles, a couple of homers and 13 walks against 16 strikeouts.

He’s a little dude – listed at 5’7″, 152 – who has none of the size, speed or strength to think he can make an impact in the big leagues. In 39 games this year in the New York-Penn League he hit .186/.294/.229 in 140 AB. He will be nowhere close to my forthcoming Top 41 Mets prospect list.

If he’s on a full-season roster to start 2013, he will be backing up Philip Evans and/or Gavin Cecchini in the Savannah Sand Gnats infield.
