#39 – LF Nick Santomauro

Bats/Throws: L/R

Height/Weight: 6’3”, 205 lbs

Acquired: 10th Rd 2009 (Dartmouth)

Born: 6/13/88 (North Caldwell, NJ)

Why Ranked Here: I’m a sucker for Ivy League and Stanford ballplayers.  Seriously.  Well, that and Santomauro has real power, approaching MLB average.  Santomauro also showed the ability to put his intelligence to work, making a nice adjustment with his hands a few weeks into the NYP League season that really helped him clean up his hand path.   His arm is average, as is his range on the corners.  He’s not going to be a plus defender, so his value is tied up in his bat.

2009: Santomauro hit .241/.368/.441.  His six homeruns in Brooklyn is a nice accomplishment for a left-handed hitter in a ballpark where the ball does not carry to right.  He’s not afraid to see a pitch or two.

Dr. Pangloss Says: Santomauro’s power will carry him to the big leagues where he will be a fourth OF.

On the Flipside: Santomauro will turn 22 in June of 2010, so he’s not particularly young.  Moreover, with 38 strikeouts in 45 games in Brooklyn, he’ll have so much trouble making contact and sustaining his batting average at higher levels that he will be Sean Ratliff, part deux.

Projected 2010 Start: St. Lucie, alongside Ratliff in CF.
