A-Ball Sunday: Mike Baxter Begins Rehab. Domingo Tapia Struggles in Lakewood

A+: @ St. Lucie Mets 7, Brevard County Manatees (MIL) 3

DH Mike (Whitestone’s own) Baxter was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI in his first rehab game since injuring his shoulder saving Johan Santana’s no-hitter.

RF Cory Vaughn continued his big July: 2-for-4 with a double and a walk. The 23-year old is hitting .340/.431/.620 with nine extra-base hits and six walks in 14 games in July, but is still hitting just .242/.347/.462 for the year.

Tyler Pill was very good: 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 7 K, 1 HR. However, his strikeout rate is down to 6.9 K/9 in the FSL (31 K/40.2 IP) after running a 9.4 K/9 (54 K/51.2 IP) in the SAL. That’s not a good sign.

The BlueClaws broke a 3-3 tie with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning off reliever Chasen Bradford.

The real story, as it is nearly every time he takes the hill was hardthrowing RHP Domingo Tapia. His line: 4.1 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 8/0 groundball/air outs. Of course he was throwing hard (96-97 mph), he always does. The bigger problem, it sounds like from those in attendance, including Amazin’ Avenue’s Jeffrey Paternostro, was that he got away his off-speed stuff in jams. That’s not unusual for him either. Again, he’s a big guy who throws hard with a big-time sinker, who generates groundballs by the bucketful, but he’s still pretty raw. Add it all up and he’s a very good prospect, however.
