The Weekend in the FSL: Huchingson’s Finest and Outfield Notes

St. Lucie only played one game this weekend, a 2-1 win over the Charlotte Stone Crabs (TB) on Saturday, after Isaac washed out Sunday’s contest.

LHP Chase Huchingson (pictured) was the star on Saturday, coming one out away from a complete game shutout. His line: 8.2 IP, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3K as he lowered his ERA to 4.17. It’s been a tough year for the lanky lefty who has walked 4.3 batters per nine and had a few outings where he did not get out of the first inning.

He told MiLB.com:

“I went through a real mental spell there. I wasn’t locked in mentally really at all. Everything just got to me. It’s not like I was trying to let that happen and I’m not saying I wasn’t lagging physically, either. But I was bouncing from a lot of games early, and I’ve spent a lot of time on the mental aspect of the game. I’m focusing on what I can control. That’s it.”

DH Darrell Ceciliani was 3-for-5 on Saturday. With five hits between Friday and Saturday, he’s up to .333/.390/.464 in 18 games in St. Lucie this year. I think the fact that he’ll max out with under 30 regular season games in the FSL will force him to begin 2013 back in St. Lucie.

RF Cory Vaughn was 0-for-4 with two walks, a strikeout and a stolen base. I wrote it over the weekend, but I’ll repeat it now: there’s plenty to like here as an MLB body produces power and speed, but it might never work with his swing. He’s hitting just .241 as part of a .241/.352/.456 line as a 23-year old.

CF Cesar Puello was 1-for-3 with a walk, a HBP and a stolen base. The 21-year old is hitting .260/.329/.417 with six walks and 15 HBP  in 59 games in St. Lucie. Oh, and he has 23 extra-base hits while going 17-for-19 stealing bases.  Puello is hitting .308/.400/.538 with eight extra-base hits, two walks and 6 HBP in 16 games in August. Getting plunked is a repeatable skill, but he’s still going to have to learn to walk a little more. His play has hardly screamed “ready for AA” either so the guess here is that barring a monster finish, playoffs and spring training, he repeats the FSL to start 2013 too.
