#10 – RHP Cory Mazzoni

Bats/Throws: Right/Right
Height/Weight: 6’1”, 190 lbs
Acquired: 2nd rd 2011 (NC State)
Born: 10/19/89 (Evans City, PA)
2011 Rank: N/A
Why Ranked Here: The Mets third pick in the 2011 draft, Mazzoni received the fourth-largest bonus of the team’s draft class behind Brandon Nimmo, Michael Fulmer and Philip Evans. Mazzoni moves ahead of Fulmer because I expect him to start a level or two ahead of the youngster in the system in 2012. You could flip the order of the two in the rankings, and I would not fight you in the slightest.

In the Florida State League, Mazzoni was mostly throwing his fastball 92-93 mph, but touched 96 in brief appearances in the New York-Penn League. He’s got a power slider in the lower 80s and a splitter.  That’s two potential plus pitches if you’re scoring at home.

At 6’1”, he doesn’t have the size that makes teams drool over big starters, so his final destination surely could be in the bullpen. On the other hand, reportedly, he’s a good athlete who repeats well.

2011: Mazzoni fanned 137 batters and walked just 29 in 114.2 innings as the ace for the NC State Wolfpack before the Mets picked him in the second round. As a professional, the Mets were very cautious with his arm.  Like Jack Leathersich, Mazzoni pitched on a starter’s schedule – every fifth day, but threw just an inning at a time.  Unlike Leathersich, Mazzoni was promoted to advanced-A St. Lucie for the month of August.

Oh, and as a professional, he ran a 18/3 K/BB in his first 13 innings.  He can miss bats.

Dr. Pangloss Says: I’ll take a mid-rotation starter if everything breaks perfectly

Debbie Downer Says:  Or a hard-throwing bullpen piece

Projected 2012 Start: Advanced-A St. Lucie

MLB Arrival: late 2014
