With the third round pick, the Mets selected RHP Matt Koch from Louisville.
The lean, wiry and strong right-hander will throw his fastball up to 94 mph, sitting comfortably a tick below that. There’s some good life to the heater as well, and he commands it well. He also throws strikes with a hard slider that has good bite and depth. …Two Major League average or better power pitches with good command should be enough to get Koch drafted early and should help him move up the ladder quickly.
His professional role was the subject of some discussion on the MLB.com stream immediately after his selection.
Jim Callis: He might have enough start to start. Good arm.
Jon Mayo: I don’t know that I would even bother having him start. … Put him in the bullpen and let him reach the big leagues in a year.
In 32.1 innings at Louisville this year, Koch struck out 20, walked eight and allowed 41 hits.
This is him last year in the Cape Cod League.
