#40 – LHP Roy Merritt

Bats/Throws: L/L

Height/Weight: 6’0”

Acquired: 29th Rd 2007

Born: 9/22/85

Why Ranked Here: Merritt, a lefthanded sidearmer is murder on lefties.  He could well turn into a very effective situational lefthander.  He throws his fastball in the upper eighties and two varieties of breaking balls that give lefties fits.  With his funky delivery, lefties just don’t see the ball well out of his hand.

2009: Lefties hit .209/.276/.322 against Merritt.  That’s good for Merritt and bad for the other guys.  In April, he was 9-for-10 in save chances, but by May had moved out of a silly AA closer’s role and became a situational lefthander.

Dr. Pangloss Says: Merritt will have a long big league career as a traveling LOOGY out of different MLB bullpens.

Debbie Downer Says: He’ll be 24 this season and AA righties smacked him around at a .355/.424/.548 clip.  Can you imagine what big league hitters will do?

I see that Fuller has remained at #40 in your rankings.

I think it would be nice if you added in an area that shows last years ranking and this year’s. I know its on the left hand side, but an extra line would just be easy for those with poor vision or the ease of navigation rather than scrolling up or down or ctrl+f.

I like having a guy like this in case Pedro Feliciano goes down especially with that Left heavy Phillies lineup. Let’s just hope Jerry keeps them both away from righties.

You know that is very odd that they didn’t give him an invite…

I wonder what his issue is with righties, because unless he can find something to be competitive in AB’s against righties it won’t matter how well he does against lefties only. Are his breaking pitches only useful against LH batters?
