A-Ball Monday: Verrett Begins Perfectly

A+: Bradenton Maruaders 10, @ St. Lucie Mets 2

St. Lucie is in the midst of executing a first to worst transition. After a 49-19 first half powered by Wilmer Flores and friends in which St. Lucie ran away with the first half title, the team is 12-19 in the second half, in last place in the FSL South.

Yohan Almonte (4.1 IP, 7 H, 9 R, 9 ER, 3 BB, 2 K) did not give the Mets much of a chance in this one.

CF Cesar Puello was 0-for-4 to drop to .238/.299/.371 in 42 games. If you’re keeping score at home, that 41 strikeouts against four walks for the 21-year old, in what’s becoming a wasted year.

A: Kannapolis Intimidators 6, @ Savannah Sand Gnats 3

Savannah starter Logan Verrett was perfect into the fifth, but gave up a pair of unearned runs on an error and three singles in the frame. He recovered to retire the side in order in the sixth and seventh. His line: 7 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 6 K. Verrett now has a K/BB ratio of 6.3 (67 K/9 BB) in 64.2 innings. He’s working with a three pitch mix: fastball slider and change and can throw strikes with all three or expand the zone with his slider. Even so, he reminds me of Greg Peavey dazzling SAL hitters with strikes. When he’s down enough, he’s effective. Monday, he even gave up 6 flyouts as he was up early.

CF Gilbert Gomez (2-for-3, 2B) and LF Dustin Lawley (2-for-3, HR, 2 RBI) accounted for all four Gnats’ hits. The 20-year old Gomez is hitting .260/.362/.355 in his 47 games with Savannah with 26 walks against 31 strikeouts. He hits like a Met, with plate discipline beyond his years.
