A-Ball Wednesday: Lets Talk Pitching and Alex Panteliodis

A+: @ Clearwaters Threshers (PHI) 7, St. Lucie Mets 3

Erik Goeddel: 4 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 5 BB, 3 K. Yuck. He’s now walked 38 batters in 80.1 innings this year while fanning only 69. I hoped for more.

Aderlin Rodriguez DHed and was 1-for-3 with a walk. The walk is key. When he’s patient, he’s going to hit.

Danny Muno (2-for-4) played second base while TJ Rivera (1-for-4, 3B) handled short again.

A: @ Savannah Sand Gnats 5, Greensboro Grasshoppers 2 (7 innings)
Greensboro Grasshoppers 1, @ Savannah Sand Gnats 0 (7 innings)

Michael Fulmer lasted just 4.2 innings in game one, his shortest outing since May 25. It looked like early-season Fulmer. Everything was up. His fastball was up in the zone, or up and out of the zone. He couldn’t throw his slider for a strike and his changeup was largely a non-factor. His line: 4.2 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K. The runs were originally unearned, but a scoring change made them both earned. It doesn’t matter. The Grasshoppers hit a lot of balls hard.

Game two was a pitcher’s duel between lefties Alex Panteliodis (pictured) and spot-starter Greg Nappo for the ‘Hoppers.

Panteliodis: 6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 7 K. He’s now struck out 26 batters in his last 19 innings while walking just three. It’s a fairly remarkable turnaround for the 22-year old. In his first 59.2 innings this year, he had 30 strikeouts and 29 walks.

He’s living on his fastball. Simply spotting that around the zone from the leftside, while throwing across his body, is more than enough in the SAL. He had trouble throwing his curve for strikes on Wednesday, and it just didn’t matter. Showing it was enough.
