AAA Monday: Brown Homers Twice, Flores Once, but 51s Lose

Andrew Brown has been on a tear51s Logo since returning from the disabled list last Friday. Monday night, he homered not once, but twice, and added an RBI triple in the 51s 10-7 loss to Tacoma at Cashman Field. The 28-year-old native of Dallas has hit safely in all three games after missing 17 days with a strained oblique. He’s also launched three homeruns during this torrid stretch, bringing his season total to seven. Brown’s batting numbers have been impressive from the get-go, leading the team with a .378 BA and 1.178 OPS. His 37 RBI in 33 games are second most on the squad behind Wilmer Flores.

Speaking of Wilmer Flores; he pulled his sixth homer of the season over the 20′ high left field wall with one out in the 3rd inning. It was one of his two hits on the day, giving him six multi-hit games in his last 10 starts. The RBI was his 46th, tying him with Sacramento’s Michael Choice for third most in the PCL.

The 51s lost despite scoring seven runs on 10 hits because the pitching was terrible all night. Again, the culprit was starter Chris Schwinden (3-6): 5IP, 8H, 6R, 5ER, 3BB, 2K. His era is 5.97 in 13 starts and he’s surrendered 86 hits in 66.1 innings this year. Even if you give him the benefit of the doubt and adjust his numbers because he pitches in the PCL and in Vegas often, his stats would still be awful.

Notes: Recently demoted Ike Davis and Mike Baxter were not in the lineup Monday….The 51s are now 2-3 through the first five games of an eight game home-and-home series with Tacoma….Monday marked the sixth time in nine games this month the 51s have managed double-digit hits….Wilmer Flores played first base for the third time this season.[/sny-editorial]
