[sny-editorial userid="48679619"]Las Vegas 51s 1, @ Tacoma Rainiers (SEA) 9
The lone Vegas run came across in the 1st inning thanks to a game-opening double by Kirk Nieuwenhuis, who scored later in the frame on an rbi groundout by Wilmer Flores. The knock for Nieuwenhuis extended his hitting streak to five straight games, during which time he’s 6 for 20 with a double and three homeruns. With his 1 for 4 effort Thursday, Flores has five hits in his last 14 at-bats and leads the team with 40 rbi.
51s starter D.J. Mitchell (2-2) entered the game coming off one of his better outings of the season seven days ago when he threw six shutout innings against Reno. However, it quickly became apparent he would not have the same success Thursday. Mitchell was pulled from the game after giving up four runs on five hits and a homerun in the 2nd inning and eventually took the loss.
Greg Peavy and Armando Rodriguez combined to allow five more Tacoma runs over the next 5.1 innings of relief work, putting the game out of reach.
The series continues Friday night with Zack Wheeler taking the hill for the 51s in what could be his final start at the Triple-A level.[/sny-editorial]
