It was not a good night for Las Vegas starter Carlos Torres, who gave up nine earned runs on 10 hits in four innings on the hill. In the process, his era went from 5.25 to 7.39 and the loss dropped his record to 1-3. It’s been that kind of season for the Santa Cruz, CA native. He’s failed to go deeper than 5.2 innings in any start this season and has given up seven or more hits in five of six starts.
Four of the five Las Vegas runs came on homeruns, with 3b Zach Lutz launching a three run shot in the 6th inning and cf Kirk Nieuwenhuis (pictured) adding a solo blast in the 7th. Its been a rough season so far for Lutz, who’s been batting around the Mendoza line most of the campaign. The homer was his second this year and the three rbi give him 16. Lutz is 4 for 26 in his last nine games and doesn’t have a multi-hit game since April 29.
For Nieuwenhuis, the long ball was his second and fourth extra base hit in 11 games in Vegas. He’s also been struggling with the bat, hitting just .205.
