Cyclones Back into NYP Playoffs

SSA: Lowell Spinners 5, @ Brooklyn Cyclones 3

The Cyclones either needed to win their final game or have Batavia lose one of their two doubleheader games in Jamestown. As it happens, the Muckdogs lost them both.

With a playoff berth in hand before taking the field, the Cyclones rested scheduled starter Luis Mateo to hold him back for game two on the NYP Semi-Finals and turned to Matt Koch, the Mets’ third round pick in 2012, to make the spot start. Koch allowed two runs, both earned on two hits and a walk while fanning two in 2.2 innings as his ERA rose to 5.01. Koch has not dominated the NYP with 25 hits allowed in 23.1 innings, and a K/BB under 3 (19 K/7 BB). For a hard-throwing college closer in a league often ruled by pitching, that’s a fairly disappointing debut.

Gavin Cecchini got the start at shortstop, and went 0-for-4.

1B Jayce Boyd was 2-for-4 with a double. This year’s sixth rounder out of Florida State, Boyd finished up the NYP regular season at .239/.320/.368 with 25 walks against 30 strikeouts.

Hansel Robles, who did not allow an earned run in August, will get the start for the Cyclones in game one in MCU Park on Friday night.
