Trailing by two runs in the 9th inning, with two outs and the bases empty, the 51s got back-to-back singles from Matt den Dekker and Brian Bixler followed by a two-run double from Brandon Hicks to tie the game and force extra innings. In the 10th, Eric Campbell drove in the winning run on a two out single to give the 51s their sixth straight victory. With Sacramento splitting a doubleheader in Colorado Springs, the 51s lead in the PCL Pacific Southern Division is now two games.
Although starter Jacob deGrom was pitching well through five innings, he fell apart in the 6th, allowing three consecutive hits and a walk to start frame before being taken out. One of the hits was a two-run homer for Kensuke Tenaka, only the fifth homerun deGrom has surrendered in 13 AAA starts (73.2 IP).
Pitching line for deGrom: 5IP, 7H, 6R, 6ER, 2BB, 4K, 1HR. He threw 86 pitches (58 strikes) and his era stands at 4.40. The six earned runs are the most the right-hander has allowed since July 4 when he gave up the same amount at Tucson. He currently stands at 145.2 innings thrown this season, which is very close to his innings limit.
Eric Campbell, Brandon Hicks and Lucas Duda were the only 51s with multi-hit games. Duda’s batting average is up to .306 in 61 AAA at-bats and he’s hit safely in five straight with five walks. Hicks drove in four of the teams nine runs.
Notes: Ruben Tejada was 0-4 and is batting .267.
