Heyman: Cesar Puello Prepared to Accept Biogenesis Deal

Puello Mets Head 2011In an article mostly focusing on Alex Rodriguez, Jon Heyman at CBSSports has the following note:

The nine or so Biogenesis-linked players who may take deals in the next day or two:Mariners catcher Jesus Montero; Tigers shortstop Jhonny PeraltaRangers outfielderNelson Cruz; Yankees catcher Francisco CervelliPadres shortstop Everth Cabrera; minor leaguers Jordan Norberto, Fernando Martinez, Fautino de los Santos and Cesar Puello.

The 22-year-old Puello is enjoying his best season in 2013, hitting .328/.405/.550 in 90 games in AA. For what it’s worth, he did not play in the Binghamton game on Thursday night. He is second in the Eastern League in batting average, second in slugging, fifth in on-base percentage, hit by pitches (16) and is tied for second in stolen bases (he’s 24-for-31). His 16 homeruns are already a new career-high, surpassing his 10 in 2011 in St. Lucie. Whether that’s related to an performance enhancing drugs or simply Puello’s natural physical maturation and improvement as a hitter is a wide open question.

The Major Leaguers will find it advantageous to take their suspensions now so that they can finish their 50-game punishments in 2013 and start fresh in 2014. Will MLB accommodate the minor leaguers in similar fashion? The B-Mets have just 32 games remaining. Will Puello be given the option of serving out his suspension in full in 2013? If it’s a 50-game ban, can the Mets add him to the active MLB roster – he’s already on the 40-man roster – in September so that he can finish serving out his suspension?
