Mets Trade Schoeneweis for Connor Robertson

Friday night the Mets continued their bullpen overhaul by shipping LHP Scott Schoeneweis to Arizona for RHP Connor Robertson.

I really like this deal. Robertson will enter the very crowded spring training scrum for right-handed relievers. He has average velocity and a nasty slider – potentially a plus offering. Robertson is a fine athlete who was a second-team All-American as a 3B at Birmingham Southern where he is the career leader in HR, TB and RBI.

In 306 minor league innings, Robertson struck out 383 batters while walking 123. That works out to 11.26 K/9, 3.26 BB/9 and a K/BB of 3.11.  His nine big league innings hardly indicate his underlying abilty.

I narrowed my look at him down to his last two years at AAA and the numbers aren’t very impressive. nearly 9 hits and 4 BB per 9 IP and not the overly high K rate that one would need to survive all those base runners.

atm I have no reason to think he will have success above AAA in 2009. The move screams salary dump, but I do like the flexability it gives to sign another lefty reliever.

Keep in mind you’re talking about the PCL there, a hitters league as a whole. I’m pretty sure it’s a hitters ballpark too.

Personally I think they want guys with a bit more flexibility in terms of options. If signed he would be a solid addition to the pen, although last year was his only real good season and he is 33. I don’t know where he fits right now.

His time missed is alarming too, what is his injury history?

just 7 games in 2000, 4 games in 2002 then missed all of 2003, and missed all of 2007.
