Michael Fulmer to DL… Sort of

The Mets just place Savannah Sand Gnats RHP Michael Fulmer with a “left shin contusion.” Craig Hansen was reinstated from the St. Lucie DL and transferred to Savannah.

Unless the 19-year old Fulmer hurt his shin on the bus, this is a classic phantom DL trip. The Gnats skipped Fulmer, the Mets supplemental first round pick in 2011, over the weekend which foreshadowed this shutdown. Putting Fulmer on the DL allows  the Gnats to carry another plater. Calling it a shin contusion keeps the important parts of his anatomy (arm, shoulder, elbow, back) with a clean medical history.

He threw 73.1 innings between high school and the GCL last year and was up to 108.1 this year so the Mets cut him off at a clean 35 increase with instructional league, starting September 17, to come.
