The Las Vegas 51s improved to 5-6 this season against Colorado Springs, winning the first game of a doubleheader 2-1 in 10 innings. For the moment, Vegas moves 2.5 games ahead of Sacramento in the PCL Pacific Southern Division with Game 2 still to come. Sacramento, meanwhile, is hosting Fresno tonight at 7:05 PST.
A fielding error by Sky Sox third baseman Reid Brignac in the top of the 10th inning allowed the go-ahead run to cross for the 51s. With Ruben Tejada batting, Kirk Nieuwenhuis at second base and two outs in the inning, Tejada (pictured) hit a grounder to Brignac who booted the ball and gave Nieuwenhuis a chance to cross the plate.
RHP Chris Schwinden had one of his best starts of the season: 6IP, 7H, 1R, 1ER, 0BB, 4K, 1HR. It’s the third time in 27 starts he’s allowed one run (no shutouts). Justin Hampson, Robert Carson and Sean Henn tossed four scoreless innings of relief.
The first 51s run was driven in by Tejada, who laced a two-out single scoring Juan Centeno in the 3rd inning.
