In his latest mock draft at MLB.com, Jonathan Mayo has the Mets selecting Louisiana HS SS Gavin Cecchini, a player the Mets have been tied to repeatedly.
If Marrero doesn’t go to the Pirates, he could land here, as could one of those college arms, but for now, the Mets likely will go with a high school hitter for the second successive year. If Cecchini doesn’t go here, he could drop a bit.
Mayo actually has Mets passing on Arizona State SS Deven Marrero at #12. He posits that that the Nationals will then pop Marrero, a gifted defender, at #16.
How about some other prospects the Mets have been tied to?
Mayo has the Pirates selecting Harvard Westlake HS LHP Max Fried at #8, the Rockies grabbing Carroll (TX) OF Courtney Hawkins at #10, the A’s pulling Texas A&M RHP Michael Wacha at #11. David Dahl, an Alabama HS OF, who Keith Law had the Mets selecting his last last mock draft, slides down to the Blue Jays at the #22.
Once again, Mayo, as Law and ESPN have done, does not have a team drafting HS RHP Lucas Giolito. Giolito pitched very little this spring after an elbow strain, but as recently as Martch was in consideration to go first overall. Someone is going to take a chance on Giolito. I suspect that someone will be in the top 10 opening up another option or two for the Mets.
