One Game Tuesday: Logan Verrett Shines

A: Savannah Sand Gnats 2, @ Delmarva Shorebirds (BAL) 0

Coming off his worst performance of the year, a five-run outing in five innings in his last start in Augusta, Logan Verrett put together his best start of the year and his first professional complete game. His line: 9 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 7 K. The Mets third-round pick out of Baylor a year ago, Verrett should not need too many more of these type of outings to earn his way to advanced-A.

Logan, as quoted by MiLB.com: “at the beginning of the game, I was focused on locating my fastball,” he said. “Last outing wasn’t a great outing, so this week I tried to focus on locating the fastball. They were helping me out by swinging at them early. I was locating it a lot better, which is why they we were able to hit it right where we were.

“Later on, I broke out the breaking stuff and tried to mix it in and keep them guessing. My slider was on point and what was able to get the strikeouts.”

The Gnats scored the game’s only runs on a two-run Aderlin Rodriguez single into centerfield. The 20-year old has hit safely in 10 straight games, going .368/.400/.737 in that run with two doubles and four homers.

2012 second-rounder Matt Reynolds was 2-for-3 with a hit-by-pitch and scored on Rodriguez’s single.
