AA: Harrisburg Senators (16-19) @ Binghamton Mets (18-17)
Saturday 1:05 ET – postponed by rain, they will play two tomorrow starting at 12:05
Ryan Sherriff made his first start of 2013 six days ago (5 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 5 K) after spending all of 2012 in Palm Beach going 10-3 with a 3.25 ERA in 97 IP.
Hansel Robles makes his second start since returning from the DL. Five days ago he threw 6 innings allowing a run on 2 hits 0 BB/5 K pushing his season total to 6 BB/21 K.
Williams Perez faced Savannah twice to open the year, picking up two wins while allowing 5 runs over 10 IP, walking 4 and striking out 7.
Robert Gsellman is expected to make his SAL debut tonight after two solid fill in outings in the FSL. He totaled 9 IP, allowed 3 runs on 5 hits, 5 walks, and struck out 5. Last year with Kingsport he struck out 33 and walked 18 over 43.2 IP.
According to Toby Hyde Chad Zurcher will go on the DL. Zurcher did not play last night after leaving Thursday nights game after 5 innings.
Despite being signed as a AAA starter Aaron Laffey never found his way to Las Vegas for the Mets. Big league needs, and then a waiver claim intervened. Now Laffey finds himself there as the visitor’s starter after the Dodgers signed him as a minor league free agent.
Zack Wheeler is just one reason not to miss Aaron Laffey, as the Mets top pitching prospect has moved himself into the spot of most likely pitcher to be called on should the Mets need a SP. In his last three starts he has struck out 19 and walked 5. Wheeler has posted a 7.36 home ERA and allowed all of his homers (3) at Cashman, all of which came before some alterations to his mechanics designed to help keep his shoulders square. A couple of strong outings in the hitters haven that is Las Vegas could go a long way for Zack.
Due to the Dodgers revolving rotation the Isotopes have used 11 different starting pitchers in their first 34 games. If they can get the lead to RHPs Chris Withrow, Steve Ames and LHP Kelvin de la Cruz they are usually in good shape. The trio has allowed just 5 ER (with 7 unearned runs) over 36.1 IP while striking out 41. Their offense is going to miss Scott Van Slyck and Dee Gordon who were both recently promoted to LA. Van Slyck was hitting .397/.503/.733 …that’s right, a .503 OBP over almost 150 plate appearances, with 20 extra base hits. Dee Gordon is hitting .314/.397/.431 with 14 steals. Tim Fedorowicz who is currently with the Isotopes (he’s been up and down) has 7 homers in 49 ABs with the ridiculous .531/.561/1.082 slash line in his time in AAA. No wonder the Dodgers call him up whenever they need an extra bat for a couple days.
