The Las Vegas 51s won their seventh straight, beating the Fresno Grizzlies 2-1 Saturday night at Cashman Field. With Sacramento losing in Colorado Springs, the 51s now have a three game division lead with 11 to play, meaning their magic number is eight. They’re 16-7 in August despite starting the month with three consecutive defeats.
30-year-old right-hander Matt Fox (7-4) had a wonderful night on the bump for the 51s, allowing one run in seven strong innings of work for the win. His control was outstanding, striking out a season-high nine without issuing a walk. It’s the sixth time in 19 starts Fox has not walked a batter. His control had slipped as of late, surrendering nine free passes his previous three starts (15.2 IP), but clearly he got it back.
Both Vegas runs crossed the plate in the 3rd inning on a sac fly from Kirk Nieuwenhuis and an RBI double from Zach Lutz. It was the 25th double of the season for Lutz (pictured), who has hit safely in four straight and eight of 10.
Notes: Ruben Tejada was 1-4, double….freshly demoted Greg Burke pitched the 9th for his 5th AAA save….the 51s wrap up the series with Fresno tomorrow night with Rafael Montero on the mound.
