The tough Midwest road trip for Las Vegas continued Saturday night in Memphis with a 4-3 loss to the Redbirds, dropping them to 0-5 on their eight game stop in Tennessee. As was the case during the four days in Nashville, the Vegas offense failed to get jump-started, managing three runs despite nine hits Saturday.
Wilmer Flores (pictured) collected his second consecutive two-hit game and has at least one knock in nine of the last 11 (excluding the May makeup game in which he hit 2HR). Although he had been a doubles machine through the first half of the campaign, the 21-year-old has only one in the last 10 games, accounting for his only extra base hit during that period. He’s also in a five game drought without driving in a run, which can be attributed to the lack of success for the rest of the 51s offense on this road trip. Despite that, Flores still leads the PCL in rbi (85) by four over Nick Buss of Albuquerque.
Ruben Tejada had a nice night at the plate, with two hits in three at-bats, including a double, rbi, run scored and a walk. It’s his first multi-hit game since July 25 (a span of nine games) and he has only three total hits since that day.
Right-hander Matt Fox started and was not involved in the decision: 6IP, 7H, 3R, 2ER, 0BB, 5K.
Notes: Jamie Hoffmann homered (7) for the 51s other XBH….Sean Henn took the loss, allowing a run in the bottom of the 8th….Matt den Dekker was 0 for 3….Kirk Nieuwenhuis was 1 for 5.
