Short-Season Monday: Brooklyn and Kingsport Toss Shutouts

SSA: @ Brooklyn Cyclones 4, Hudson Valley Renegades 0

The Cyclones won their fifth straight behind strong pitching from 22-year-old Carlos Valdez and 20-year-old Akeel Morris. Morris finished off the last three innings with a walk, two hits and two strikeouts. Despite a pair of unearned runs, he has not allowed an earned run in his 25 innings pitched while fanning 31 and walking 12. At 20-20, the Cyclones are two games out in both the Division and the Wild Card races. Otherwise you know, it looks like Morris is ready for a few SAL innings.

SS Gavin Cecchini (.227/.268/.273): 0-for-4. He’s 1-for-12 since returning from the disabled list with an ankle sprain.

R (APP): Kingsport Mets 4, @ Elizabethton Twins 0

22-year-old Marires Arias: 7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 HR, 2 BB, 7 K. Arias is spending his second year in Kingsport after working out of the bullpen in 2012 and pitching in the GCL in 2011.

The guy I’m more interested in is reliever Ricky Jacquez. The little guy (5’9″) can run it up to 94 and has been untouchable in Kingsport: 13.1 iP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 23 K. He’s fanned 49% of the opposing hitters. He’s too good for the league and would likely be an asset to Savannah, and would certainly help Brooklyn.

R (GCL): @ GCL Cardinals 5, GCL Mets 2

1B Dominic Smith went 0-for-3 with two walks to snap his 10-game hitting streak.

Rehabbing Travis d’Arnaud was 0-for-3.
