Short Season Monday: Cyclones fall; Reyes rehabs; Morris racking up the K’s; Draft picks in action

SS-A: Lowell Spinners 11, @ Brooklyn Cyclones 4

A rare workday matinee for the Cyclones was highlighted be the presence of Jose Reyes.  Reyes, who is scheduled to start for the Mets on Tuesday, went 1-3 with a sixth inning double. Recorded attendance was 8.162. Thank you Mr. Reyes.

Richard Lucas (1-3, HR (3), RBI) homered for the second straight game.

Marcos Camarena: 5 IP, 8 hits, 7er, 2bb, 4k 3 HR.

Akeel Morris deserved a better outcome on Monday. Morris was extended into the seventh inning for the first time in his brief career, but the bullpen could not help him out. Morris left the contest with two runners on and one out in the top of the seventh.  Reliever Darwin Frias allowed both of those runners to score as Greenville pushed across four runs in the frame.

Morris’ final line: 6 1/3 IP, 5 hits, 3 er, 3bb, 10k, HR.

Morris now leads the Appalachian League with 36 strikeouts. The 18-year old Morris is holding opponents to a .211 average, and is averaging an impressive 13.7 K/9. Morris is struggling with his command (5.3 BB/9), but his ability to miss bats on a consistent basis is a testament to the quality of stuff he possesses.

Kingsport rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth, but an eleventh inning homerun by Chan Moon lifted Greenville to the victory.
