SSA: Tri-City Valley Cats (HOU) 4, @ Brooklyn Cyclones 3 (11 innings)
Not a Cyclone, but 1B Jesse Wierzbicki had the first cycle in ‘Cats history and hit a two-run homer in the 11th to win it. He’s 23 in the New York Penn League from UNC in his second year as a professional. Feel free to forget the name.
RHP Gabriel Ynoa had another nice start: 6.2 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K. I’m a fan, at least as far as a I can go with a guy with an averagish MLB fastball in the New York-Penn League. The 19-year old has a sweet looking 6.9 K/BB ratio (55 K/8 BB) in 66.2 innings and feel for throwing strikes. He should be in the Top 41 too.
CF Maikis De La Cruz (.284/.328/.404) was 2-for-4 with a triple, his fifth in 59 games. At 21 in the Appy League, I don’t see an everyday profile, but he can really run and will hang around the system for a while.
DH Gavin Cecchini was 3-for-5 with a double, two RBI and a strikeout. In 15 games in August, the 18-year old is up to a healthy .296/.367/.352 with three doubles, five walks and 14 whiffs and .262/.333/.357 in 48 games overall playing against guys 2-4 years older. He’s doing just fine.
RHP Akeel Morris is working in relief these days. Thursday: 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K, 1 HR. While touching 93, he’s plenty wild – 20 walks against 44 strikeouts in 35.1 innings. Morris had essentially zero competitive pitching experience when he tried out for the Mets, so describing him as raw is accurate if understated, still.
