A: Savannah Sand Gnats (25-24) @ Augusta Greenjackets (30-23) Listen
Sunday 1:00 ET – RHP Tim Petersen (0-0, 5.79) vs. RHP Justin Schumer (4-7, 4.77)
Sun. Game Two – LHP Steven Matz (4-5, 2.46) vs. TBA
Steven Matz struck out 9 in his last start (5 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 0 BB) which was the fourth time in his last eight starts in which he has struck out 8 or more. Tim Petersen (0-0, 5.79) and the pen will pick up a lot of today’s innings as Savannah tries to stretch their starters to the playoffs without reaching innings limits. Jake Kuebler recently came off the DL so he would be an option as well
Michael Fulmer struck out 8 in his last start raising his k rate to 22.6%, but he walked 4 for the second consecutive start raising his walk rate to 13%.
When Josh Hodges is on his game its a tough task, in 6 of his last 8 starts he has allowed 1 run or less with 28 base runners in 41 IP. In each of the other two starts he allowed 7 ER with 19 base runners in 8.1 IP.
Brent Powers has made 40 appearances (36 starts) for Vermont since being drafted in 2011.
Rob Gsellman has pitched 90.1 IP this year (plus some XST) after throwing 43.2 IP last year (plus a full XST) for Kingsport. He’s found his level with the NYPL as he’s posted his best K and BB rates. He’s very likely to come into camp next year with a Savannah rotation spot his to lose.
Sam Lewis allowed the K-Mets 5 runs (4 ER) on 4 hits and 3 walks over 4.2 IP on July 14th.
RHP Andrew Massie (1-1, 3.90) and LHP Yoan Gonzalez (3-4, 3.75) are also options as the K-Mets have started mixing and matching their pitchers depending on the opponent. The K-Mets are 2.5 games up on Elizabethtown for second in the division and a playoff spot, with 12 games remaining.
D.J. Baxendale was dominant in 9 starts for Fort Myers (7-0, 1.10) but has managed just 38 K in 67.1 IP while batters have hit .298 against him at the AA level.
Erik Goeddel beat New Britain on July 21st allowing 3 runs (2 ER) on 6 hits and 2 walks while striking out 8 in 5.2 IP.
