Thursday: Short Season Boppers

SSA: Brooklyn Cyclones 5, @ Auburn Doubledays 2

The game turned on five Cyclones’ runs in the top of the seventh, but I’m more interested in CF Darrell Ceciliani going 2-5 and RF Cory Vaughn going 2-3 with an IBB.  Ceciliani, who turned 20 in June is hitting .370/.425/.555 with 16 doubles and 10 triples.  He leads the league in AVG, OPS and is second in OBP and third in SLG.
Meanwhile, the 21-year old Vaughn is hitting .317/.401/.569 and is second in the league in slugging, HR and total bases.

R – Kingsport: @ Elizabethton 8, Kingsport Mets 5
18-year old 3B Aderlin Rodriguez was 2-4 with a double (his 16th) and a home run (his 12th).  He’s bopping at a .296/.338/.561.  When I told a few Sand Gnats players I’d been up to Kingsport last weekend, they all wanted to talk about Aderlin.  Good choice.  He’s second in the Appy in HR and six in slugging.

R – GCL: Mets 7, @ Cardinals 5
Juan Urbina: 5 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 2 HR.

Cardinals 8, @ Mets 7
Akeel Morris: 2.2 IP, 5 R, 0 ER, 4 BB, 5 K.  The walks aren’t pretty, but he also had to deal with a defense fail.

    Toby,

    Two quick questions…

    1) After Keith Law watched a Cyclones game he tweeted that he wasn’t impressed with Vaughn as he “Can’t hit legit pitching”. Given his performance thus far, has Vaughn proven some doubters wrong? Moreover, do I have reason to get excited about him?

    2) The Mets seem to have a lot of outfielders in their lower levels right now with Ceciliani, Vaughn, Den Decker, Puello, and Javier Rodriguez. How do you see their assignments shaking out next summer? At the very least, do you expect all of them to play full-season ball?

    Thanks,
    Andrew

You’re absolutely right, but I think they made the right move this draft by going after almost entirely pitchers. The last good pitcher to come out of this farm system was over 25 years ago, not acceptable… despite him being much more than just good.
