Tuesday in A-Ball: Rainy Lara Storms Mauraders

A+: St. Lucie Mets 4, Bradenton Marauders (PIT) 0

Lara Delivery (Devyatkin)This one was delayed 23 minutes by rain on Tuesday morning before Rainy Lara could get going. Lara’s performance lasted longer than the rain and was more impressive: 5.2 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 8 K, WP. Lara’s basically been the same guy he was in the SAL in the FSL. His his walk rate (from 3 to 4.7%) and hits allowed (20% to 22%) have both moved up, but barely. At the time he was promoted, I wrote this about the 22-year-old:

Lara mostly throws 90-91 from the right side although he will get to 92 once most nights and 93 on a better night, but he works at 90-91. He complements that with a slider and a changeup. The slider is below average now, but he has feel for it, and throws it a lot. Multiple scouts have told me they can see Lara pitching in the big leagues – either in middle relief or at the back end of a rotation.

The only thing I will add here is that more scouts saw him as a middle reliever than as a back-end starter.

DH Kevin Plawecki got the day off from catching, and went 2-for-4 with an RBI. He’s hitting .333/.333/.481 in six games in advanced-A with no walks and three strikeouts. This is the Wilmer Flores approach to promotions – swing, and make hard contact early in counts which limits walks and strikeouts.

Rehabbing CF Matt den Dekker was 2-for-3 with a walk. He’s now hit safely in six straight games, but is looking for his first extra-base hit in nine games. Will the Mets need to see him drive a ball or is decent strike zone contral (3 walks/3 strikeouts) enough to earn a return trip to AAA? I’d argue that a double or two would help him earn his plane ticket west to Sin City.

A: Savannah @ Augusta – ppd by rain to August 16th
