Tuesday in AA: Puello Reaches Four Times, Leathersich Still K King

AA: Binghamton Mets 8, Altoona Curve (PIT) 5

The B-Mets scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh, an inning that began with a Wilfredo Tovar single, to snap a 4-4 tie.

RF Cesar Puello (.296/.382/.513 – 42 gms) reached base four times: he was 1-for-1 with a double, two walks and a HBP.  He’s now up to 12 walks and nine hit-by-pitches this year. That all works out to a BB+HBP rate of 12% of plate appearances, much more palatable than his 7% walk rate, which itself represents major progress.

1B Allan Dykstra had a pair of hits, a double and two RBI. My opinion on him has not changed since the weekend.

Erik Goeddel was good enough to pull his ERA under 5, barely, to 4.99: 6 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 6 K, 1 HBP with 69% strikes (69 of 101 pitches).

Jack Leathersich in the eighth and ninth needed five outs, and struck out five. Overall, Leathersich has a 1.48 ERA and 45 strikeouts against 13 walks in 24.1 innings. In May, he has been even better: 11.1 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 24 K. This month he has struck out 56% of opposing hitters and walked 7%. Yeah, it’s 11.1 innings, but that’s ridiculous. Perhaps the most ridiculous thing about Leathersich is now much better his results have been than his pure stuff would suggest. He works around 91-ish, like 90-92, touching 93 if you’re looking for a range with a curve and a changeup. He’s tightened up the curve some in the last few years and made the pitch more repeatable. His motion does not (from the press box) appear absurdly deceptive. And yet, there he is, racking up strikeouts with stuff that’s just a bit above ordinary.
