Tuesday Short Season: Kingsport bats quiet; Francisco Pena’s big game

SS-A: Brooklyn Cyclones – PPD

SS-R: @ Danville Braves 8, Kingsport Mets 1

The Kingsport bats were held silent in the 8-1 loss to Danville.  Kingsport managed a rbi single by John Semel, for the only scoring output of the game.  In total, the offense was held to 4 singles and struck out 10 times.

Making his 1st start of the season, Chase Huchingson was awful (3 IP, 5 hits, 5 er, 1 bb, 1 k, HR).

SS-R: @ GCL Mets 4, GCL Astros 2

Francisco Pena went 3-3 with a double, and scored 2 runs in the 4-2 victory.  The 20-year old Pena raised his season totals to: 9 games, .321/.441/.357, with 5 bb and 4 k.  Pena has had a history of struggling with the lack of walks and a propensity to strikeout.  So far so good, so this is somewhat encouraging.

Domingo Tapia was solid in the victory (6 IP, 7 hits, 2 runs, 1 er, 0 bb, 6 k).

At the age of 20 do you think Pena is starting to catch up to his physical tools. He’s still young enough that he could return to a prospect status.

What is your take on Pena right now… I know it’s a small sample size of 9 games. Even Failcore looked good over 9 game stretches in what should be a brief mets career.

      He’s playing. That’s good.
He’s hitting. That’s good. However, it’s in the GCL where the numbers are as close to as irrelevant as it gets in professional baseball. I’d like to see the Mets bring him to Savannah for the final two weeks because he’s not going to take away from Gronauer’s playing time in St. Lucie and that way I’d get to see him play a little.

Agreed 100% with Toby. The positives is that he is on the field and playing. The GCL #s are pretty much meaningless, but its the only thing we have to document so thats why they are mentioned. Keeping him on the field and away from the training room is the biggest positive right now. Savannah could use him also for their playoff series.

Thanks guys… keep up the good work!! Both of your opinions on prospects i really like as they are all even keeled and don’t lean Anti or Pro towards the mets or any other team for that matter.
