Wednesday in the SAL: Tourists’ Singles Stop Gnats

Asheville Tourists 5, @ Savannah Sand Gnats 2

Six straight singles from the Tourists to begin the sixth inning added up to four runs, turning a 1-1 game into a 5-1 lead.  The first four singles were off Erik Goeddel and the final two off reliever Luis Rojas, who allowed two runs charged to Goeddel to score.

Goeddel’s final line: 5 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 3 K.  He’s made three starts since returning from a right shoulder strain that sidelined him for two months, and to my eyes is not in rhythm yet.  He threw more good curveballs on Wednesday than he did in his previous start, but his fastball doesn’t look like it has the same kind of life it did early in the year.  In 13 innings since his return: 13 hits, six walks and six strikeouts.

CF Darrell Ceciliani (.252/.340/.346) was 2-4 with a double, two strikeouts and a stolen base.  The 21-year old is finally, (maybe) getting hot as part of a .308/.400/.365 line in 14 games in August.

C Blake Forsythe (.225/.330/.375) lined a homer in the ninth, his sixth of the year to right-center.  He’s had a rough couple of weeks in August, .140/.259/.260 with 23 strikeouts in 14 games, so it was nice not just to see him homer, but to hit a ball hard somewhere.
