The 51s dropped Game 1 of their Wednesday doubleheader at Colorado Springs 4-3 in extra innings. The loss trimmed the 51s division 51s Logolead to two games ahead of Sacramento with six games left in the regular season.

The most troublesome news of the day however deals with starting pitcher Jacob deGrom, who was escorted off the field by the 51s training staff after completing just two innings on the mound. For now, the nature of the apparent injury is unknown. deGrom had allowed two runs on three hits in his two frames and, according to the 51s radio broadcast, showed no obvious signs of a specific problem before the trainers came out to check on him. The 25-year-old was making his 26th start (14th in AAA) and was pitching on regular rest. He entered the game having had a few tough starts lately, especially August 23 against Fresno, when he surrendered six earned runs in five innings.

Righty John Church was forced into early action out of the Vegas bullpen and for the most part did a very nice job, especially considering the circumstances. The one blemish came in the bottom of the 4th when he gave up the game-tying solo homerun to Kent Matthes. Otherwise, he was just about perfect, not allowing another run to cross in three full innings, which was his longest outing of the season. Church was one of the few rested arms in the 51s pen, having not pitched since August 25. The rest of the relief corps have been used a ton lately thanks to a playing another doubleheader two days ago and no team days off since August 7.

Justin Hampson allowed the winning run to score in the 8th and was saddled with the loss. The 51s scored all three of their runs in the 1st inning and couldn’t manage anything else the rest of the game.

Notes: The 51s left the bases loaded twice….Dustin Lawley was 1-4 in his AAA debut.[/sny-editorial]
