Acidity | Symptoms, Causes, Types, Diet & Home Remedies Explained

Experiencing frequent acid reflux or heartburn can be uncomfortable and disruptive. Understanding acidity, its symptoms, causes, and effective home remedies can help you manage and prevent this common digestive issue naturally.

Ingredients

  • Fresh ginger root – 1-inch piece, grated
  • Fresh mint leaves – 10-12 leaves
  • Warm water – 1 cup (250 ml)
  • Honey – 1 teaspoon (optional)
  • Lemon juice – 1 tablespoon (freshly squeezed)
  • Baking soda – 1/4 teaspoon (optional, for immediate relief)

Instructions

  1. Start by boiling 1 cup of water in a small saucepan or kettle.
  2. While the water heats, prepare the ginger and mint. Grate the ginger and crush the mint leaves gently to release their aroma.
  3. Once the water boils, pour it into a mug and add the grated ginger and mint leaves. Cover and steep for 5-7 minutes to infuse the flavors.
  4. After steeping, strain the mixture to remove the ginger and mint leaves, pouring the infused water into a clean cup.
  5. Add the lemon juice and honey (if using) to the infused water. Stir well until the honey dissolves completely.
  6. If you need immediate relief from acidity, you can add a pinch of baking soda to the drink. Stir vigorously until it dissolves and then drink immediately.
  7. Consume this herbal remedy warm, ideally 2-3 times a day or whenever symptoms occur.

Tips

  • Substitutions: If fresh ginger is unavailable, use 1/2 teaspoon of ginger powder. For a milder flavor, reduce the amount of mint or omit it altogether.
  • Storage: Prepare this infusion fresh each time for maximum efficacy. However, you can store leftover infused water in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours, reheat before drinking.
  • Common mistakes: Avoid adding too much baking soda, as it can cause bloating or gas. Also, do not consume spicy or greasy foods immediately after using home remedies, as they can worsen acidity.
  • Additional tips: Maintain a healthy weight, eat smaller meals, and avoid lying down immediately after eating to prevent acidity.

Serving Suggestions

Enjoy this herbal tea as a soothing beverage after meals or whenever you experience heartburn. Incorporating ginger and mint regularly can also help reduce the frequency of acidity episodes. Remember, if symptoms persist or worsen, consult a healthcare professional for proper diagnosis and treatment.
