Amyris Oil: 20 Benefits, Side Effects, Uses & How to Make It

Amyris oil, derived from the Amyris balsamifera tree, is a versatile essential oil celebrated for its calming aroma and numerous health benefits. Its natural properties make it a popular choice in aromatherapy, skincare, and holistic wellness routines. In this guide, you’ll learn how to harness Amyris oil’s potential safely and effectively.

Ingredients

  • Fresh Amyris balsamifera wood chips – 1 cup (about 100 grams)
  • Carrier oil (such as jojoba, almond, or coconut oil) – 1 cup (240 ml)
  • Optional: distilled water – 1/4 cup (60 ml) for infusion

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Amyris wood chips by ensuring they are dry and free of any dust or debris. You can purchase pre-cut chips or break larger pieces into smaller fragments to maximize extraction.
  2. Place the wood chips in a clean, airtight glass jar or a double boiler setup. If using a double boiler, fill the bottom pot with water and heat gently.
  3. Pour the carrier oil over the wood chips, ensuring they are fully submerged. If you wish to create an infusion, add distilled water to the mixture.
  4. Seal the jar tightly or keep the double boiler at a low simmer. Allow the mixture to infuse for 4-6 hours if using a double boiler, or place in a warm, dark spot for 1-2 weeks if doing a cold infusion, shaking gently daily.
  5. After infusion, strain the oil through a fine mesh or cheesecloth into a clean glass bottle, removing all solid particles.
  6. Store the Amyris oil in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight. Label the bottle with the date of infusion.

Tips

  • Substitution: If fresh Amyris wood isn’t available, dried chips or even essential oil extracts can be used for specific applications.
  • Storage: Keep your Amyris oil in a dark glass bottle to prolong its shelf life and preserve its aromatic qualities.
  • Common mistake: Overheating the oil can degrade its beneficial properties. Maintain gentle heat or cold infusion methods as recommended.
  • Usage caution: Always perform a patch test before applying to the skin to check for sensitivities or allergic reactions.

Serving Suggestions

Use Amyris oil as a natural addition to massage oils, diffusers, or skincare formulations. Its calming scent makes it ideal for promoting relaxation and reducing stress. Incorporate a few drops into your bedtime routine or blend with other essential oils like lavender or chamomile for enhanced benefits.
