Ashwagandha Oil: 20 Benefits, Side Effects & How to Make It

Ashwagandha oil is a popular herbal remedy derived from the roots of the Ashwagandha plant, renowned for its adaptogenic properties. Making your own at home allows you to harness its natural benefits for stress relief, skin health, and overall wellness.

Ingredients

  • Dry Ashwagandha roots – 1 cup (about 100 grams)
  • Carrier oil (such as almond, coconut, or sesame oil) – 2 cups (480 ml)
  • Optional: essential oils (such as lavender or eucalyptus) – 10-15 drops

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Ashwagandha roots by grinding them into a coarse powder using a mortar and pestle or a spice grinder. This increases the surface area for infusion.
  2. In a clean, dry glass jar, combine the powdered Ashwagandha roots with the carrier oil. Use a ratio of about 1 part roots to 2 parts oil by volume.
  3. Seal the jar tightly and place it in a warm, sunny spot, such as a windowsill, for at least 2 weeks. Shake the jar gently every 2-3 days to ensure even infusion.
  4. After the infusion period, strain the oil through a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a clean container to remove the plant material.
  5. If desired, add 10-15 drops of essential oils to enhance scent and therapeutic properties. Mix well.
  6. Store the finished Ashwagandha oil in a dark glass bottle in a cool, dry place. It will keep for up to 6 months.

Tips

  • Use high-quality, organic Ashwagandha roots for the best potency and purity.
  • If you prefer a quicker infusion, gently warm the oil and Ashwagandha mixture in a double boiler on low heat for 2-3 hours, then strain.
  • For longer shelf life, keep the oil in a dark glass bottle away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
  • Always perform a patch test before applying the oil to larger skin areas to check for sensitivity or allergic reactions.

Serving Suggestions

Use Ashwagandha oil topically by massaging it into your skin for relaxation, or add a few drops to your bathwater for a calming soak. Incorporate it into your skincare routine or dilute it with a carrier oil for massage to enjoy its holistic benefits.
