Black Salt: 20 Benefits, Side Effects, Uses & How Much to Eat

Black salt, also known as Kala Namak, is a flavorful mineral-rich salt widely used in Indian cuisine and traditional medicine. Its unique taste and health properties make it a popular choice for enhancing dishes and supporting wellness.

Ingredients

  • Black salt (Kala Namak) – 1 teaspoon (approx. 6 grams)
  • Water – 1 cup (240 ml)
  • Lemon juice – 1 tablespoon (15 ml) (optional)
  • Fresh herbs (cilantro or mint) – for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Measure out 1 teaspoon of black salt and set aside. If you prefer a milder flavor, you can adjust the amount accordingly.
  2. Bring 1 cup of water to a gentle boil in a small saucepan or kettle.
  3. Once boiling, add the black salt to the hot water. Stir well to dissolve as much salt as possible. The water will turn slightly dark and aromatic.
  4. Remove from heat and allow the mixture to cool for about 5 minutes. This creates a flavorful black salt infusion that can be used in various recipes or consumed directly.
  5. If desired, add a tablespoon of lemon juice to the cooled infusion for a tangy twist, which can aid digestion and enhance flavor.
  6. Pour the infused water into a glass. You can drink it as a health tonic or use it as a seasoning in salads, raitas, or chutneys.
  7. Garnish with fresh herbs if desired, and serve immediately or store in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.

Tips

  • Substitutions: If you don’t have black salt, regular sea salt or Himalayan pink salt can be used, but they won’t provide the same distinctive flavor or benefits.
  • Storage: Keep unused black salt in an airtight container in a cool, dark place to preserve its flavor and mineral content.
  • Common mistakes: Avoid boiling the black salt for too long, as excessive heat can diminish some of its mineral benefits. Also, do not add too much lemon juice if you are sensitive to acidity.
  • Usage note: Black salt has a strong sulfurous aroma, which is normal. Start with small quantities and adjust to taste.

Serving Suggestions

This black salt infusion can be enjoyed as a refreshing health tonic, added to fruit salads for a savory touch, or used as a seasoning in Indian dishes like chaat, chaats, or raitas. Its unique flavor complements spicy, tangy, and savory recipes, making it a versatile addition to your kitchen.
