Bottle Gourd: 20 Benefits, Nutrition, Side Effects & How Much to Eat

Bottle gourd, also known as lauki or dudhi, is a versatile vegetable widely used in Asian cuisines. Its mild flavor and high water content make it a healthy addition to various dishes, while its numerous health benefits support overall wellness. Discover how to incorporate this nutritious vegetable into your diet effectively.

Ingredients

  • 1 medium-sized bottle gourd (about 500 grams), peeled and chopped
  • 2 tablespoons cooking oil (vegetable or mustard oil)
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 green chili, chopped (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder (adjust to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 cups water or vegetable broth
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish

Instructions

  1. Heat the oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle for about 30 seconds.
  2. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Stir in the minced garlic and chopped green chili (if using), cooking for another minute until fragrant.
  4. Mix in the turmeric, coriander powder, red chili powder, and salt. Cook for 1 minute to toast the spices.
  5. Add the chopped bottle gourd to the pan, stirring well to coat with the spices.
  6. Pour in the water or vegetable broth, cover the pan, and bring to a boil.
  7. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 20-25 minutes, or until the bottle gourd is tender and cooked through.
  8. Uncover, stir in garam masala, and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes to meld flavors.
  9. Garnish with freshly chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or flatbread.

Tips

  • Substitutions: You can add other vegetables like spinach or peas for variation.
  • Storage: Store leftover cooked bottle gourd in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat thoroughly before serving.
  • Common mistakes: Avoid overcooking to prevent the vegetable from becoming mushy. Use fresh gourd for the best texture and flavor.
  • Choosing the gourd: Select a firm, smooth bottle gourd without blemishes or soft spots for optimal freshness.
