Brahmi Oil: 20 Benefits, Side Effects, Uses & How to Make It

Brahmi oil is a traditional herbal oil renowned for its remarkable benefits in enhancing mental clarity, reducing stress, and promoting hair health. Crafted from the revered Brahmi herb, this oil has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic practices to support overall well-being and cognitive function.

Ingredients

  • Fresh Brahmi leaves or dried Brahmi herb – 1 cup (about 20-25 grams fresh leaves or 15 grams dried)
  • Coconut oil or sesame oil – 1 cup (240 ml)
  • Optional: Brahmi powder – 2 tablespoons
  • Essential oils (like rosemary or lavender) – 5 drops (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Brahmi herb: If using fresh leaves, rinse them thoroughly to remove dirt and impurities. Chop the leaves coarsely. If using dried herb, measure out the required quantity.
  2. Combine ingredients: In a clean, dry glass jar or a double boiler, add the coconut or sesame oil and the Brahmi leaves or powder. If using fresh leaves, you can slightly crush them to release more oils.
  3. Heat gently: Place the jar in a double boiler or a saucepan filled with water. Heat on low heat for about 2-3 hours, ensuring the oil does not boil or burn. This slow infusion helps extract the beneficial compounds from Brahmi.
  4. Strain the oil: After the infusion period, allow the oil to cool slightly. Strain it through a fine mesh or cheesecloth into a clean bottle or jar. Discard the plant material.
  5. Add essential oils: If desired, add a few drops of essential oils like rosemary or lavender for fragrance and additional benefits. Mix well.
  6. Store properly: Keep the Brahmi oil in a dark, airtight container in a cool, dry place. It remains good for up to 6 months if stored properly.

Tips

  • Substitution: You can substitute coconut oil with sesame oil or olive oil based on your preference or availability. Each oil has different nourishing properties.
  • Storage: Always store Brahmi oil in a dark glass bottle to protect it from sunlight, which can degrade its quality over time.
  • Application: For best results, use Brahmi oil regularly for scalp massage, hair growth, or topical application on skin and hair.
  • Precautions: If you have sensitive skin or allergies, perform a patch test before full application. Discontinue use if irritation occurs.

Serving Suggestions

Use Brahmi oil as a scalp massage oil twice a week to promote hair growth and reduce dandruff. It can also be used as a facial oil to nourish the skin or as a calming massage oil for relaxation. Incorporate it into your daily hair care routine or apply a small amount on temples and forehead to help reduce stress and enhance mental clarity.
