Brazil Nut Butter: Benefits, Nutrition, Side Effects & How to Make It

Brazil nut butter is a rich, creamy spread made from finely blended Brazil nuts, prized for their high selenium content and unique flavor. Making it at home allows you to enjoy a fresh, natural product packed with health benefits and free from added preservatives.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup raw Brazil nuts (about 150 grams)
  • 1-2 teaspoons neutral oil (such as coconut oil or avocado oil), optional for creaminess
  • Pinch of sea salt, optional

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Spread the Brazil nuts evenly on a baking sheet.
  2. Roast the nuts for about 10-12 minutes, stirring once halfway through, until they are fragrant and slightly golden. Allow them to cool completely.
  3. Transfer the cooled nuts to a food processor fitted with a sharp blade. Process on high speed for about 5 minutes, stopping occasionally to scrape down the sides.
  4. Initially, the nuts will become crumbly, then gradually release their oils and turn into a smooth paste. Continue processing until you reach your desired consistency, which may take 10-15 minutes.
  5. If the mixture is too thick or crumbly, add 1 teaspoon of neutral oil and process again until smooth. Add more oil as needed, a teaspoon at a time.
  6. Once smooth, add a pinch of sea salt to enhance flavor, and pulse a few times to incorporate.
  7. Transfer the Brazil nut butter to a clean jar with a tight-fitting lid. Store at room temperature for up to 2 weeks or in the refrigerator for up to a month.

Tips

  • Substitutions: Use roasted nuts for a deeper flavor or raw nuts for a milder taste. Adjust the amount of oil based on your desired creaminess.
  • Storage: Keep your homemade nut butter in an airtight jar. If stored in the fridge, it may become firmer; let it sit at room temperature for a few minutes before spreading.
  • Common mistakes: Overprocessing can cause the butter to become too oily or greasy. Stop processing once the mixture is smooth and cohesive.
  • Extra flavor options: Add a teaspoon of honey or cinnamon for a sweet twist, or a splash of vanilla extract for added aroma.

Serving Suggestions

Brazil nut butter is a versatile spread that complements toast, pancakes, or fruit slices. You can also incorporate it into smoothies for added creaminess or use it as a dip for apple slices and vegetables. Its rich flavor pairs well with dark chocolate or yogurt for a nutritious snack or dessert.
