Breathing Exercises: Types, 25 Benefits, Side Effects & How to Do

Breathing exercises are simple yet powerful techniques that can significantly improve your mental and physical well-being. Incorporating different types of breathing practices into your daily routine can help reduce stress, boost energy, and enhance overall health.

Ingredients

  • Comfortable clothing – 1 set
  • Quiet, distraction-free space – 1 area
  • Optional: Timer or stopwatch – 1 device
  • Optional: Guided breathing app or audio – 1

Instructions

  1. Choose your space: Find a quiet, comfortable spot where you won’t be disturbed. Sit upright in a chair or cross-legged on the floor, ensuring your back is straight.
  2. Set your intention: Decide which breathing technique you want to practice—whether it’s deep diaphragmatic breathing, box breathing, or alternate nostril breathing.
  3. Start with a baseline: Take a few natural breaths to settle into the practice. Observe your current breathing pattern without trying to change it.
  4. Practice the chosen technique: Follow the specific steps below for each type:
    • Deep diaphragmatic breathing: Inhale deeply through your nose for 4 seconds, allowing your abdomen to expand. Hold your breath for 2 seconds. Exhale slowly through your mouth for 6 seconds. Repeat for 5-10 minutes.
    • Box breathing: Inhale through your nose for 4 seconds, hold your breath for 4 seconds, exhale slowly for 4 seconds, then hold your breath again for 4 seconds. Continue this cycle for 5-10 minutes.
    • Alternate nostril breathing: Use your thumb to close one nostril, inhale through the open nostril for 4 seconds, then close that nostril with your finger and exhale through the other nostril for 4 seconds. Repeat for 5-10 minutes.
  5. Gradually increase duration: As you become more comfortable, extend each breathing cycle by a few seconds to deepen the practice.
  6. Finish slowly: Conclude your session by returning to natural breathing, sitting quietly for a minute to absorb the benefits.
  7. Repeat regularly: For best results, practice breathing exercises at least once daily, ideally in the morning or before bed.

Tips

  • Use guided resources: Beginners can benefit from apps or audio recordings that guide you through different breathing exercises, ensuring correct technique.
  • Maintain consistency: Incorporate breathing exercises into your daily routine to experience sustained benefits. Even five minutes a day can make a difference.
  • Avoid overdoing it: While these exercises are safe for most, avoid forcing your breath or practicing when feeling unwell or dizzy.
  • Modify for comfort: Adjust the duration and intensity based on your comfort level, especially if you have respiratory conditions. Consult a healthcare provider if unsure.

Serving Suggestions

Integrate breathing exercises into your daily wellness routine, especially during stressful moments or as part of meditation, yoga, or relaxation practices. Over time, you’ll notice improved focus, reduced anxiety, and better physical health.
