Cinnamon Water: Health Benefits, Side Effects & How to Make It

Cinnamon water is a simple and refreshing infusion that combines the warm aroma of cinnamon with hydrating water. Not only does it serve as a flavorful beverage, but it’s also believed to offer various health benefits, from boosting metabolism to supporting digestion. Making cinnamon water at home is easy, affordable, and a great way to incorporate this spice into your daily routine.

Ingredients

  • 2 cinnamon sticks (or 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon)
  • 4 cups (1 liter) of filtered water
  • Optional: sweetener such as honey or agave syrup (to taste)
  • Optional: fresh lemon slices or mint leaves for added flavor

Instructions

  1. Start by boiling the filtered water in a saucepan or kettle. Bring it to a rolling boil to ensure the cinnamon infuses well.
  2. While the water heats, prepare your cinnamon sticks. If using ground cinnamon, measure out about 1 teaspoon.
  3. Once the water reaches a boil, remove it from heat and add the cinnamon sticks or ground cinnamon.
  4. Cover the container and let the mixture steep for at least 30 minutes. For a stronger cinnamon flavor, you can steep it for up to 2 hours or refrigerate overnight.
  5. After steeping, strain the water to remove cinnamon sticks or any solid residues if you used ground cinnamon.
  6. If desired, add a teaspoon of honey or your preferred sweetener, and stir until dissolved.
  7. Optional: squeeze in fresh lemon juice or add mint leaves for extra flavor and health benefits.
  8. Pour the cinnamon water into a glass or bottle and serve chilled or at room temperature. You can also store it in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.

Tips

  • Substitutions: Use ground cinnamon if you don’t have sticks, but keep in mind it may be slightly more intense and may require less steeping time.
  • Storage: Keep cinnamon water refrigerated and consume within 48 hours for the best flavor and freshness.
  • Enhance flavor: Adding a few slices of fresh lemon or a sprig of mint can boost the taste and provide additional health benefits.
  • Common mistake: Oversteeping cinnamon can make the water bitter. Stick to recommended steeping times for optimal flavor.

Serving Suggestions

Cinnamon water can be enjoyed throughout the day as a hydrating and health-boosting beverage. Serve it chilled on hot days or warm during colder months for a comforting drink. You can also use it as a base for smoothies or iced teas for added flavor and benefits.
