3 Doors Down have had nine official members since they formed in Escatawpa, Mississippi, in 1996. The current line-up is Chris Henderson, Greg Upchurch, Chet Roberts and Justin Biltonen, who took over lead vocals in 2026. None of the three founders remains: Brad Arnold, Matt Roberts and Todd Harrell are all former members.
The band broke through with their 2000 debut single “Kryptonite”, which reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100, and the album The Better Life. Here is every member, with each person’s role and years in the band.
Chris Henderson – Rhythm Guitar, Backing Vocals (1998–present)
Chris Henderson joined in 1998, two years after the band formed, when Todd Harrell asked him to come in on rhythm guitar. He had previously played in a band called Burning Bridges. He is now the only member left from the line-up that made The Better Life.
Greg Upchurch – Drums (2005–present)
Greg Upchurch, formerly of Puddle of Mudd, joined in 2005 to replace Daniel Adair, and has been the band’s drummer ever since.
Chet Roberts – Lead Guitar, Backing Vocals (2012–present)
Chet Roberts had been Chris Henderson’s guitar tech. When Matt Roberts left in May 2012, Henderson announced that Chet Roberts would take over as lead guitarist.
Justin Biltonen – Bass (2013–present), Lead Vocals (2026–present)
Justin Biltonen, formerly of the Campaign 1984, was announced as the band’s new bassist on May 24, 2013, a week before a European tour. He became the permanent replacement for Todd Harrell and, in 2026, also took over lead vocals.
Brad Arnold – Lead Vocals (1996–2026), Drums (1996–2000)
Brad Arnold was a founding member and the band’s lead singer for its whole history until 2026. In the early years he also played drums. He wrote “Kryptonite” in high school, at age 15. Arnold announced a cancer diagnosis in May 2025, and he died on February 7, 2026.
Matt Roberts – Lead Guitar, Backing Vocals (1996–2012)
Matt Roberts was a founding member and played lead guitar, and rhythm guitar until 1998. He announced on May 23, 2012 that he was leaving the band to focus on his health. He died in 2016.
Todd Harrell – Bass (1996–2013)
Todd Harrell co-founded the band on bass with Arnold and Roberts. He left in 2013, and the band confirmed in 2014 that he had permanently left and that Justin Biltonen would continue as bassist.
Richard Liles – Drums (2000–2002)
Richard Liles took over the drums in 2000, when Brad Arnold moved out from behind the kit to focus on singing. He played with the band until 2002.
Daniel Adair – Drums, Backing Vocals (2002–2005)
Daniel Adair played drums from 2002 to 2005. He left to become the drummer of Nickelback, and Greg Upchurch replaced him.
