Drowning Pool have had seven official members since they formed in Dallas, Texas, in 1996. Three of them have been there from the start, guitarist C.J. Pierce, drummer Mike Luce and bassist Stevie Benton, while the singer’s spot has changed hands four times: Dave Williams, Jason “Gong” Jones, Ryan McCombs, Jasen Moreno and, since March 2023, McCombs again. The band took its name from the 1975 film The Drowning Pool.
Here is every member, with roles and years as the band’s own member list gives them, followed by the sequence of singer changes.
C.J. Pierce – Guitars (1996–present), Backing Vocals (2003–present)
C.J. Pierce formed the band with Mike Luce after the two relocated from New Orleans to Dallas, where they recruited Stevie Benton. He has played on every Drowning Pool record.

Co-founder and drummer since 1996.
Stevie Benton – Bass (1996–present), Backing Vocals (2003–present)
Recruited in Dallas by Pierce and Luce in 1996, and the band’s only bassist.
Ryan McCombs – Lead Vocals (2005–2011, 2023–present)
Ryan McCombs of the Chicago band SOiL was revealed as the band’s new singer on July 20, 2005. He recorded Full Circle (2007) and Drowning Pool (2010), the first time the band kept the same singer for two albums, then left in November 2011 to rejoin SOiL. On March 16, 2023, the band announced that he had rejoined after a 12-year absence while continuing with SOiL.
Dave Williams – Lead Vocals (1999–2002)
Dave Williams sang on the platinum debut Sinner (2001) and its hit “Bodies”. He was found dead on his tour bus on August 14, 2002, from an undiagnosed heart condition.
Jason “Gong” Jones – Lead Vocals (2003–2005)
Jason Jones replaced Williams in 2003 and recorded one album, Desensitized (2004), before leaving in 2005 over musical differences.
Jasen Moreno – Lead Vocals (2012–2023)
Jasen Moreno, from The Suicide Hook, was announced as the new vocalist in July 2012; the band’s first release with him, “In Memory Of…”, came out on August 14 that year, the tenth anniversary of Williams’s death. He sang on Resilience (2013), Hellelujah (2016) and Strike a Nerve (2022), making him the band’s longest-serving vocalist, and left in March 2023.
